Fletcher Cove Murals

Overview
Betsy Schulz was chosen by the City of Solana Beach in 2005 to design a sea-inspired mosaic mural for the City’s new Fletcher Cove Park. Her design, inspired by the local beach and ocean life, includes sculpted birds, fish, plants and shells with their names pressed in tiles beside them for easy identification. The view plaza represents the different ocean zones: sandy beach, sub-tidal soft bottoms, tide pools, rocky intertidal zone and so on. Over 60 donor tiles are the leaves of the giant kelp that run along the walls that parallel the stairs. Ten sea-inspired poems throughout the park describe different aspects of coastal life. The shells used were collected by a local resident over 30 years. Residents were encouraged to take part on-site, and more than 50 volunteers participated in the application of the mosaics.
