Overview
In 2003 Betsy Schulz worked with Becky Candra, director of the La Jolla United Methodist Nursery School, to realize dreamlike nature-inspired play sculptures (made to resemble the nearby ocean bluffs), an ocean-inspired mural, and a serene waiting area and outside classroom for children and parents. Schulz and parent volunteers mosaicked small insets to suggest water rolling off the benches and sandbox. A magical underwater scene was created with separate areas that children can use as a chalkboard. TotTurf® was used on the ground around the planter bench and sandbox, and seeded concrete and a stream-bed patio were made from broken tile and stone to surround the waiting-area bench and drinking fountain. All broken tile was donated or recycled from other projects. The area now has a warm, comfortable and natural whimsical feel.
