La Jolla Presbyterian Children’s Garden
Overview
In 2004 Betsy Schulz worked with Betty Hilbert, director of the La Jolla Presbyterian Church Preschool, to realize a children’s landscape reminiscent of La Jolla Cove. Smooth tide pool rocks were sculpted from concrete. A new sewer pipe became a wonderful volcano tunnel. A water feature was created by placing a fountain in one of the recessed areas. Schulz worked with preschoolers and parents to install a mosaic of broken tiles, stones, geodes, marbles and shells. The sculptural tide pool area consists of a cave, three wooden docks, two planters, a small geyser, a tiki hut, the sandy beach, the volcano and the tunnel through the mountain.
